Baby Jesus Returned To Church Exactly 1 Year Later
by The Patriot Ledger staff

ROCKLAND - A year to the day after it was stolen, a Jesus figure from the Nativity Scene at Holy Family Church has been returned.

The Rev. James F. Hickey went to the Abington police station and reclaimed his parish’s statue of Baby Jesus.

Tonight it will be restored to the nativity scene on Union Street. By tradition, the infant is placed in the creche on Christmas Eve.

‘‘Son of a gun it’s back,’’ the Rev. Hickey said. ‘‘It’s more than ironic. It’s spiritual. You’ve got to go find Jesus in your life.’’

The statue, valued at $1,000, was one of two left last Saturday at St. Bridget’s Church in Abington. The Rev. Hickey identified it Friday as the one taken from Holy Family last Dec. 23.

‘‘I’m sure this will be the source of a decent homily,’’ he said.

Police could not say if the other statue has been claimed.

Prospect Hill, a religious supply company in Brockton, donated a replacement last year, and the Rev. Hickey said he will return it with the thanks of his congregation.
